4 Ways To Eliminate Salt!

You probably already know that the main component of the Cabbage Soup Diet is eliminating salt all week. 

Having TOO MUCH salt in our diets can lead to bloating, water retention, weight gain, and other health issues, including high blood pressure.saltnpepper

But, it is also true that we do need a certain amount of sodium daily.  Sodium, found in salt and in other foods, helps to balance fluid levels in the body, among other things.

However, most Americans consume 20x more salt DAILY than they actually need!  This EXTRA salt is what leads to weight gain, water retention, and bloating.

4 Ways To Use Less Salt Now!

So, since we are all about getting rid of the excess salt here in Cabbage Soup World, here are 4 ways to use less salt – even after you’re off the Cabbage Soup Diet.

Use Other Spices!

This is something you hopefully did while you were on the Cabbage Soup Diet, so keep this new habit up!  There are so many other spices – more exotic, flavorful, and HEALTHIER than salt.  Try nutmeg, turmeric for sauces, lemon juice as salad dressing.  Use fresh herbs, like basil and mint, as well.

Sear, Sauté, or Roast!

 Searing and sauteing foods are both good ways to let the natural flavor of the food out.  Try lightly folding veggies in tinfoil and grilling them, or sauteing your protein (like chicken or beef) with vegetables in the pan to combine the flavors.

Find Other Whole Grain Sources!

Did you know bread can contain a LOT of sodium? (And sugar!)  Skip the store bought bread and consume your grains in other ways, like eating quinoa, having steel-cut oats instead of toast or pre-packaged oatmeal.

Eat What Is In Season!

Often, we add salt because we are looking for a more intense flavor experience.  Skip the salt and head to the local Farmer’s Market.  In-Season produce is guaranteed to have the richest flavor – and the most nutrients! Plus, you’ll be helping out your local economy and local farmers. Win win!

    I have used Mrs. Dash instead of salt for years and do not miss salt at all.
