LOL the offical rule, as told to me by my children is:
If it grows above ground and has seeds it's a fruit
Don't know if this is true or not

You know....there has been a disbute about tomatoes FOREVER....and I have never used them as fruit... who makes tomato pie or tomato shakes....just as I would never use cucumbers as fruit...and what about zuccini squash, yellow summer squash and green peppers, string beans and on and on...Geez, except for root veggies, don't half the veggies we eat ...which all grow above ground ... have seeds inside of them? (exception- leafy greens, cabbage and such. Tomatoes are in the soup, which IS a vegetable soup.

Tomato, tomato. Brookesidelady is right when it comes to this century old disputes. When I studied foods and so forth it was made clear to me. Yes, most "things" with seeds are fruits. I.e. bananas, apples, kiwis and mangos. But to clear two "fruits" here, both an avo and tomato are both classified as a vegetable and are by no means a fruit. However bare in mind that whatever grows above the ground has to reproduce and seeds are needed for that. So I guess it comes down to the technicality of it all.
