where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

I am from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, having moved here with my husband 5 years ago whom I met in England in 2000, after moving to the UK from Cape Town South Africa so I guess I am from 3 continents! I however am now Canadian and proud of it!
I have lost 4lbs and started on Jan 1st after a terrible binge over Christmas which started at the end of November.  I have for the last 30 years tried every diet and must have lost and put on about 200lbs!  I am now just over 200lbs for my 5.4’ frame is now giving me health problems, sore knees etc. I am at my heaviest ever and up until 8 years ago when still living in South Africa, I was “normal” although always thought myself fat.  I was a size 14 (UK) on average with a few lbs up and down but have always dieted myself to an unhappy state and made my weight the main issue in my life.  How sad, I turned 50 in November 06 and my sister gave me an album she had put together of my life and when I looked back on photos she had got from friends and family, I had tears running down my face, I was beautiful, average size and certainly not obese like I am now but I thought I was.  So for 30 years of my life I wasted precious time worrying about how I looked and what I wore and “if my bum was fat in that”.  Well yesterday I opened up Dr Phill’s book on 7 steps to overcoming your weight( I saw it at the library and it jumped out at me) and my eyes were opened wide, two things in the beginning stood out for me, firstly that dieting sets you up for failure and secondly there is no such thing as willpower for dieting.  By saying you are going on a diet you are already setting yourself up to fail and willpower is like adrenaline for use when you need to push yourself what you need is to program yourself.
I am on day 5 of CSD but I am calling it a detox rather than a diet.  The hardest was the bananas and milk day, but I made it yesterday in spite of sitting watching tv with my husband who was tucking into Quality Street Chocolates with one modification, I used the ingredients for the soup yesterday but stirfried them in Pam and a little spice and water instead of soup.

My goal for 2007 is to turn my attention into why I comfort eat and binge and to stop dieting and just be eating healthy and once a month I will do the “detox cabbage soup plan” plus then eat healthy cutting out white flour, sugar and cut down my alcohol consumption  to the odd glass of red wine as a special treat.

So sorry so long winded but when I started typing I could not stop!  Will let you know of my progress along the way, this is the first time I have gone online with my thoughts and feelings so I hope it is ok.

Wonderful post Lillia. You sound exactly like most of us.. I just turned 62 and an now disabled and yes we did waste so much of our youth worring about things that were just fine..This is a good detox for anybody. Gets all the fats and sugars out of your system and shrinks your stomach somewhat till when you go back to healthy eating of steamed and broiled foods, it is not a shock.  And you feel so much better. It cant help but to help your blood pressure, blood sugar and tons of other health issues. Over a little time probably cholesterol too. At my age I have to get serious about this stuff and have a slice of pizza maybe once a month as a reward. Any way lots of luck to you.

Its all mind over matter

Re: where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

Here, Here, lillia!!  Well said!

I love Dr. Phil.  He tells it like it is and we all know it, yet need to hear it occasionally.

I had a similar situation as you over the Christmas holidays.  My brother-in-law decided to show some old home movies of the family as far back as 20 years.  I looked great back then, but I remember always being worried that my tush was too wide or that my thighs were too fat......oh, to be the way I was back then!

I also don't make New Year's resolutions.....I think they also just set you up for failure.  Instead, I set goals and make plans to achieve things thoughout the year.  I take it one day at a time and I have a list that I make. I keep it posted so that I see it everyday and I cross out what I accomplish.  I keep the list simple and attainable, but if I don't meet all of my goals, oh well!  I try the best I can.

My biggest goal this year is to lose 40 lbs.  When I say it, it seems like a lot, but when you break it down over the course of a whole year, it doesn't seem that bad.  It comes out to about 3-4lbs/month.  I CAN DO THAT!!  Even if I only lose a portion of that I will still consider it a success and keep trying until I finally get it done!

I wish you the best of luck and do keep posting......that's what forums are all about!  We can all support and encourage each other! smiley-hug

Have a super day!

Re: where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

:biggrin:Thanks Sweets and Want2Bslim, I like the idea of crossing off goals and will give that a try, I also have about 40 to 50lbs to lose and by breaking it up it will be easier, problem in the past with me,( I have been a member of Weight Watchers and other slimming clubs here and in the UK) is that I have a last supper if I break out of the routine and then also on the day I used to weigh in at the clubs  that night I basically made a pig of myself! ate everything that was forbidden or high in points so this time I am not going to meetings, just taking it day by day and I love this forum, as we can chat together and keep each other motivated
will keep you posted

Re: where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

Hello! I am from Canada too! Just outside Vancouver.
I am a mother of six and I just turned 37. I have never had a weight problem, even after all those kids I always managed to get back to a size 0.However...I had knee surgery a few years ago and noticed I gained enough weight to have my flub hang over the waist of my pants...and I also have hypothyroidism which hasn't helped either.
Anyway...the last year has been a struggle. I gained 25 lbs. in the last year and a half. So right now I weigh 130lbs. I am 5'5". Now 105lbs is not a healthy weight at my age but my goal is 110lbs.
Anyway...I am begining day 3 here and have lost nothing.smiley-sad
I know I am not going to lose 20lbs on this but losing something would sure give me the motivation.
Kay...sorry I am babbling here...
I sure do hope all of you are successful...and have a great weekend too!

Re: where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

Hi to you big.fat.O ( I think you should change your name by the way to something more positive - how about Vancouver babe?) I just happen to go onto this website and saw your post to an old one of mine.  I tried the csd a couple of times and unfortunately it did not work for me, the bloating, stomach ache and farting was a bit much. Also I found that I was using it as a crutch, thinking I could then have a binge and I could always fall back on it.  I am with a local slimming group, not WW - too expensive - and although my weight is coming off very slowly, I am rather trying to eat healthy as apposed to this diet binge cycle I am on.  My advice to you, as you are not overweight at all is to not try any instant miracle quick fix.  Try this once, then go onto a healthier eating plan by just counting your calories.  It is a very well known documented fact that if you take in more than you spend, you will gain weight.  You also have hypothyroidism and I would suggest you go onto the new Canada Health eating plan and limit your daily calories, do more excercise and the weight will eventually come off.  Once you start your dieting and eating yo yo lifestyle it messes up your metabolism for good and it is the last thing you want.  This diet has worked for some people but is not sustainable nor can fit into a normal healthy lifestyle nor life - try socialising on it or just having a normal family life with you on this and the rest of your friends and family eating normally.  For me I found I was getting resentful of dieting and it was making me very unhappy.  I have a hell of a long way to go but have changed the goal posts a bit, not expecting too much, and rather trying to be healthy.

Re: where are we from? Dieting makes you fat!

Hello all! I am from Portland, Oregon United States. I totally agree.....It is a life style change, and being on this diet for long periods of time can't be healthy! I too would like to 6 more lbs, and then go on a more healthy sustainable life stye change. Here is my problem: I don't eat enough. I find at 3pm some days that I didn't eat...or just nibbled. All of that is storing into fat.....no, no eating disorder, I am just not that into food. I have always been this way.

It will be really hard for me to change my habbits after this plan. I just hope that I can stay on track. I would hate to mess up my metabolism so much that I can't get it back. Good luck to all of you....this is a great support system!

big.fat.o......actually, I find it a little humorous! LOL, but that is my sense of humor!
