Beat the Flu Season With These Tips!

Catherine here,

January not only brings resolutions but cold weather and unfortunately the flu. Hopefully you haven’t had it yet and won’t get it! Doctors still say the best defense is a flu shot and plenty of vitamin enriched foods. Here are some more tips:

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. A common recommendation is to drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Some of you may need more or less, depending on how much you are working out and sweating.

Get Plenty of Sleep. Rest is important to avoid getting sick. Put some jasmine rice in your cabbage soup or veggie stir-fry mixture. Eating high glycemic index foods (in moderation) four hours before bedtime will shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep.

Exercise Early. Mild exercise early in the day will also help you to rest better. If you exercise right before bed you will have a higher heart rate and you will not relax easily. Exercise raises your core body temperature and sends stimulating hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and your body will still want to stay up!

Stir Fry. Use a colorful array of veggies for your stir fry to make sure you get the best vitamins. Thinks colorful peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach and cauliflower. Fresh chicken, pork or lean beef will also provide great protein. If you don’t eat meat then scramble some eggs to put in there or some tofu. A lot of my cooking friends put pumpkin seeds in their stir fry. The seeds have tryptophan in them, which helps regulate sleep.

You get the idea – healthy foods, water, exercise and sleep to help fight off getting sick!
